- Format
- Praxis Core has three subtests that can be taken together (Core Combined 5752) or one at a time. Reading (5713) has 56 selected-response questions in 85 minutes. Writing (5723) has a 40-minute section of 40 selected-response questions plus two 30-minute essays. Mathematics (5733) has 56 questions in 90 minutes, and an on-screen calculator is available. Some questions on each test are unscored pretest questions. Some real questions ask you to select more than one answer or to type a numeric answer. This site practices the selected-response questions only (152 in all), and every practice question has 5 answer choices with one correct answer, so the full mock takes 215 minutes; the essays are not included.
- Passing score
- Each subtest is scored on a scale of 100 to 200, and each state or agency sets its own passing score for each subtest. This site uses 70% correct as a practice goal only; it is not an official passing score. Check the passing score where you plan to teach.
- Eligibility
- Anyone can register for Praxis Core. Many teacher preparation programs and states use it as an entry or licensing requirement, and the rules differ from place to place. Check what your program or state requires before you register.

Praxis Core study tips
Written by our team- Study order
- Start with the subtest you feel weakest in, because each subtest is passed on its own. In Mathematics, begin with Number and Quantity (about 36% of the test) and Data Interpretation, Statistics, and Probability (about 32%), then Algebra and Geometry. In Reading, practice Key Ideas and Details and Integration of Knowledge and Ideas first, since each is about 35% of the test. In Writing, learn Grammar and Usage before Revision in Context and Research Skills.
- Topics people often miss
- In Writing, Grammar and Usage questions hide errors in subject-verb agreement and unclear pronouns, and some sentences have no error at all. In Reading, Integration of Knowledge and Ideas asks you to judge whether evidence supports a claim or to compare two passages, which takes careful rereading. In Math, percent change and multi-step word problems in Number and Quantity cause many mistakes, so write each step down.
- Test day tips
- Reading gives you 85 minutes for 56 questions, a little over 1.5 minutes each; Math gives you 90 minutes for 56 questions. The Writing selected-response section is only 40 minutes for 40 questions, so keep a steady pace of about one minute per question. Do not leave any question blank: mark hard ones, move on, and come back if time remains, and use the on-screen calculator in Math only for long arithmetic.

Start with the subtest you find hardest, because you must pass each subtest on its own. In Math, practice percent, ratio, and reading graphs, which appear often. In Writing, learn the common grammar errors one at a time. In Reading, always go back to the passage to find proof for your answer.
