- Format
- In most states the salesperson exam has two parts: a national (general) portion and a state portion. The national portion usually has 80 scored multiple-choice questions, plus a few unscored pretest questions that you cannot tell apart. Time limits are set by each state; 150 minutes is common for the national portion. This site follows the Pearson VUE national salesperson content outline (80 scored items in 8 areas), which closely matches the PSI national outline. Each question here has 4 answer choices with one correct answer. All questions on this site are original AI practice questions, and the state portion is not covered.
- Passing score
- Each state sets its own passing score. For example, Texas and Virginia require 56 of 80 national questions, and Ohio and Hawaii require 70%. This site uses 70% correct as a practice goal only.
- Eligibility
- Each state sets its own rules for the salesperson license, such as minimum age, required pre-license course hours, background checks, and how to apply for the exam. Check your state real estate commission before you register.

Real Estate Salesperson Exam (National Portion) study tips
Written by our team▼ Show▲ Hide
- Study order
- Begin with Real Estate Contracts and Agency, the largest area with 16 of the 80 scored items, using the Contracts and Agency chapters here. Then study Property Characteristics and Land Use and Property Value and Appraisal, which have 11 items each. Finish with Financing and Settlement and Real Estate Math, and practice the math a little every day.
- Topics people often miss
- Real Estate Math has only 7 items, but every one asks you to apply or analyze a formula, so it takes the most time. Agency questions are tricky because several answers can sound kind or helpful; choose the one that keeps the client's confidential information safe and still discloses known material defects. In Ownership, Estates, and Liens, watch the difference between joint tenancy and tenancy in common.
- Test day tips
- Many states give 150 minutes for the 80 national questions, which is close to 2 minutes per question, but check your state's handbook. Answer the word questions first and save the math for later so it does not eat your time. A few unscored pretest questions are mixed in and cannot be identified, so answer every question carefully.
