Format
40 multiple choice questions in two parts: 20 on traffic signs and signals and 20 on Ohio motor vehicle laws and safe driving. The Ohio BMV does not post a time limit for the knowledge test, so this practice mock uses 30 minutes. This practice mock uses 4 answer choices per question, like the BMV sample test.
Passing score
You must answer at least 75% of the questions correctly in each part: 15 of the 20 sign questions and 15 of the 20 law questions.
Eligibility
In Ohio you can take the knowledge test and apply for a temporary instruction permit (TIPIC) at age 15 years and 6 months. You must pass the knowledge test and a vision screening, and an applicant under 18 needs a parent or other responsible adult to co-sign. Check the Ohio BMV website for the current documents, forms, and fees before you go.

Study order
Start with the three sign chapters, because the Traffic Signs and Signals part is 20 of the 40 questions and must be passed on its own. Then study Right of Way and Speed, Passing, and Parking, which carry the most weight in the law part. Finish with Safe Driving Practices, the TIPIC and probationary license rules, and the OVI chapter.
Topics people often miss
Speed, Passing, and Parking has many numbers that are easy to mix up, such as 10 feet from a fire hydrant, 20 feet from a crosswalk, 30 feet from a stop sign, and 50 feet from a railroad crossing, so keep them in one list. The permit and probationary license chapter has ages, months, hours, and two different night limits. In the OVI chapter, remember that drivers under 21 have a lower limit than adults.
Test day tips
You need 15 correct answers out of 20 in each part, so a strong score on signs cannot make up for a weak score on laws. Read every answer choice before you pick one, because wrong choices often differ by a single number or word. If a question is hard, think about which choice keeps pedestrians and other drivers safest.

Ohio DMV Permit Test exam trends

Half of the test is about signs and signals, so sign shapes and colors, warning signs, flashing lights, and pavement lines matter a lot. The law half covers right of way, school bus and emergency vehicle rules, speed limits, parking distances, the permit and probationary license rules, and Ohio's OVI (impaired driving) law. The chapters on this site are study groupings, not official test sections.

Study the sign chapters first, because signs and signals make up half of the test and you must pass that part on its own. Then practice right of way and speed, passing, and parking, and finish with the permit rules and OVI law, which are full of numbers. Redo every missed question the next day, and before test day take a full 40-question Mock Exam and aim for at least 17 correct in each part.
